World Down Syndrome Day is an annual event to commemorate those who suffer from the Down syndrome.
March 21, in fact, has been chosen to symbolize the syndrome not coincidentally. It is a literal numeric symbol.
It is known that the disease is caused by a trisomy of the 21st chromosome (condition when it exists in three copies).
That is why the Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on the 21st day of the third month.
The disease was named after English physician John Langdon Down who was first to describe the syndrome as a form of mental illness in 1862.
World statistics show that one in 700 children are born with the Down syndrome. The probability to give birth to a baby with such disease is a meer genetic coincidence, claim scientists.
Currently, there exist special intensive programs to promote physical and intellectual development of children with Down syndrome.
