France reports first ever SARS-like virus discovery

French Health Minister, Marisol Touraine informed on Tuesday that SARS-like virus has been identified in France for the first time.

He also added that the virus infection should be considered an “isolated case”.

The infected man has been put into intensive care unit in Douai, and is currently on artificial life support receiving blood transfusions. More detailed information and his prognosis was not announced.

French health authorities have been working to identify everyone the man has contacted days before the hospitalization to prevent the possible spread of the virus. Special hotline has been established in France for this purpose as well.

The French announcement comes right after Saudi Arabia reporting 13 new instances of the disease. According to the Saudi Arabia authorities, all new cases were discovered in the eastern provinces of the country, and all hospitalized patients had some kind of pre-existing condition.

The virus is believed to be less contagious than common types of flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome virus and the new Chinese bird flu virus, but the human-to-human transmission is possible, though not very common. The flu has been already identified in Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and now, France.
